DeMatha offers tons of different clubs and organizations for a plethora of different interests. One of the newest clubs is the DLC, or the DeMatha Latino Community. Senior Moisés Alvarez is reigniting this club after it was formed a few years ago before it faded away.
Moisés got the idea when Mr. Holsey reminded him of a club from a few years ago that had the same objective– to bring Latinos in the DeMatha community closer together and form a sense of unity and brotherhood between them.
The mission of the club is for the Latino brothers to help each other in any way possible, specifically academically, socially, and financially. This can be accomplished by tutoring, open discussions in the club, guest speakers, and fundraisers that could help contribute to scholarship funds.
When asked about who would be allowed to join, Moisés said, “Well honestly, the idea is for Latinos to join, that’s why it’s called the ‘DeMatha Latino Community’ but obviously we would be open to anyone coming because ultimately we are one human race.” The club will be proctored by art teacher Mr. Holsey and new Spanish teacher Ms. Galan. The first meeting was on Wednesday, September 12 in the art room, and it will continue to meet weekly every Wednesday.”
