Stags get back on the winning track

Despite an opening game loss to Archbishop Spalding, the DeMatha football team has bounced back and gotten off to a strong start. The team is 3-1 and currently ranked 26th in the nation according to MaxPreps.

The Stags opened up their season with a 26-10 loss to Archbishop Spalding. Senior defensive back Devon Bertrand said, “We came into the game feeling cocky and took them lighter than we should have.” He also mentioned that communication on the defensive side of the ball was off and the defense didn’t fly around to the ball.

But the Stags bounced back and followed that loss by dominating Mt. Zion Prep 48-0. Junior defensive back Thomas Berry said, “The Mt. Zion game was the bounce back game we needed and it gave us momentum going into the Roman Catholic game.” The Stags were firing on all cylinders and came out on top with the huge win.

The team used the momentum to travel to Philadelphia and dominate Roman Catholic 49-12. Berry said, “Roman Catholic was a big win for us and it sent a statement to the rest of the WCAC.” The Stags showed that they were a different team than they were week one.

They proved the doubters wrong with back-to-back blowout wins. In their latest game, the Stags beat nationally ranked Massillon (OH), who at the time was ranked 25th in the country according to MaxPreps. After the 20-14 win, Bertrand said, “We had good focus and everyone was handling their responsibilities.” The Stag defense smothered the Massillon offense and made it difficult for them to move the ball.

The win proved that the Stags can compete with some of the nation’s best teams. Coming off three straight wins, the Stags looks poised for a WCAC championship run.
