The Final Push!

DeMatha is nationally known for their excellence in athletics. This year is no different, as the Cross Country team prepares to compete in the finals this weekend.

The team has been extremely locked in as of recently, getting in extra workouts and preparing both mentally and physically for what’s to come this weekend. Junior Anthony “L.A.” Bardonille said that practice has been a little different. He says they are “going super hard but also not overdoing our bodies. Having hard days, with a mix of light days for recovery has been working.”

The mental aspect of cross country is just as important as the physical. Mentally persevering through both fatigue and self doubt is the most critical aspect. This week’s preparation has been a little different than others.

A few members expressed how much bringing a first place trophy would mean to them. Senior Yaphet Negussie expressed his excitement heading into this weekend. “As a senior, winning would mean a lot!” Yaphet said.

The physical aspect is, of course, a battle of its own. Their bodies must be in tip-top shape even after a long, hard fought season. DeMatha is looking to make this final push, and bring home the hardware for the first time since 2006. Head coach Cory Puffett is confident in his team and the hard work they have put in over the course of this year. Let’s go Stags!!
