The DeMatha JV Lacrosse team has so far had a disappointing season with a 1-5-1 record. There are a multitude of factors for the season and the hardships this Stags team has had to go through this year.
While the team’s chemistry has been top-notch, the lack of experience from the players is a limiting factor to the team’s success. New players coming into the game and having to adapt on the fly have caused this team to lose a lot of games this year in an unpleasant fashion.
One of the more disappointing losses was to rival Gonzaga. The unit overall played well, however they couldn’t find ways to execute down the stretch. Another disappointing loss was to St. Albans. DeMatha believed that they were better, ultimately playing down to their opponent’s level and losing. Letting teams win games they shouldn’t has been the story of the season so far.
When asked what the fix to their season is, junior Michael Boxley stated, “We just need to stay focused… We’re all either coming from different sports or new lacrosse players, so we need to build more together.” The players and coaches recognize the problems of this team. All they need is time to figure out how to grow as a team continuously.
Boxley talked about his individual play so far in the year, as well. “I feel focused on the field as it is a new sport for me. I know I can produce on the field and also have an understanding of me being a leader for the younger guys, as I am one of the juniors on the team.”
Currently, the Stags are in a tough spot and are struggling. However, they still have the hope and belief that they can finish off the year strong. They do not believe their record is a reflection of their play on the field; and for some of the varsity hopefuls on the team, this could be an opportunity for them to develop for next year.
