The DeMatha varsity soccer team under new head coach Judah Cooks has opened up their season with a 3-3-1 record while being 3-0-1 in conference play. The three opening games were all close losses for the Stags against quality out-of-conference opponents.
When asked about the 0-3 start, sophomore Navare Fermin said, “Starting 0-3 hurt our confidence before we got to play any conference games.” The Stags first conference game resulted in a tie against Good Counsel but the next game would be a challenging one against reigning WCAC champions The Heights. Going into the game Andy Ruiz stated, “We were nervous but we knew we needed to play together and get a win over The Heights.”
The game ended 2-1 with the Stags on top and a big win for the team. Going into the next two games, the Stags had regained their confidence and were prepared for the upcoming games. The next two games were wins over Paul VI and St. John’s, both by a 3-1 margin.
There are eight conference games left in the season and the Stags have been playing very well. The team has said a lot of positive things about new head coach Judah Cooks and thinks he has very good knowledge of the game and motivates the team well. There are a lot of high hopes this season and the Stags have all the talent and assets needed for a WCAC championship.
