As we kick off the fall season Rugby’s 7 on 7 season is coming into play. The team is led by second year head coach Ryan Kivketts and senior captains Liam Donnelly and Shaun Williams-Trahan.
Over the past two years with coach Kivketts under center the team has learned “discipline and leadership,” Liam says. DeMatha won the “Corridor 7s” championship in the fall of 2023 with a 3-1 record and defeated one of the area’s top club teams (the Roosters) in the title game. The team has found a lot of new ways to win under the new head coach and they hope to repeat as champions of the Corridor 7s this year.
The Stags were the first team other than the Roosters to win the tournament. The team will play in four 7-on-7 tournaments this fall, which Liam says requires “speed, stamina and better passing. It is a much faster and shorter game than the 15-on-15 spring season.” The Stags have been on the rise in rugby and have been taking the small steps to build a great program.
The team is coming off losing nine starters from last year and is moving into more of a rebuilding year have some less experienced players. Shaun says, “The team is young but will be fast and flying around the field when the tournaments start.” Coming off tournament wins from last year, the team looks to hold that standard and continue to use their athleticism to guide them to victory.
