The DeMatha crew team has been training really hard for this upcoming season with their first race being the Occoquan Challenge Regatta in Fairfax Station, Virginia on Sunday, October 6.
“It’s been really exciting this fall to prepare for a very competitive series of regattas,” Head Coach Rich Blorstad ’10 said this week. “Our athletes have been dedicated to our training plan so far.”
Coach Blorstad says the team has been rowing 10 to 15 miles every day “to make sure we are in the best physical condition.”
In October 2012, DeMatha was admitted to the Head of the Charles Regatta for the first time. Unfortunately, two other crew teams unintentionally collided with our boat on the course, bringing us to a complete stop and resulting in a bad outcome.
This fall, DeMatha has been granted entry to participate in Boston for the first time in seven years. The Stags will head north later this month, looking to build on their success from the previous year and place in the top half of all competitors at the Head of the Charles Regatta after placing eighth in the country last spring. “Hopefully we come back having secured a spot in next year’s Head of the Charles Regatta,” Mr. Blorstad said.
The team is launching a brand-new racing shell this season, which they hope will offer an advantage over other high school crew teams. The new boat is named after Coach Chris Ridgeway, a member of the class of 2006.
