Five games into the 2024 season, the Maryland Terrapins find themselves 3-2 (16th in the Big 10) coming off a tough loss to Indiana.
One of the reasons they have a winning record is because of their offense, which is averaging 33.4 points per game. The Terps’ starting quarterback, Billy Edwards Jr, is Top 10 in passing yards, throwing for 1,444 yards, while also completing 72.3% of his passes for 11 touchdowns and 2 interceptions.
Edwards’s favorite target, Tai Felton, is having a breakout season of his own. He currently has the third most receiving yards in the nation, only trailing Tre Harris from Ole Miss and Jack Bech from TCU.
Junior Patrick Moran has high hopes for him, saying “[Felton] is looking like one of the better wide receivers in this upcoming draft.” Felton is having an historic season for the Terps. He had 178 receiving yards in one game, which is the most yards for a Terp since DJ Moore had a 210-yard receiving game in 2017. He is the second player in Maryland history to have four consecutive games with 100+ receiving yards.
Fellow junior Michael Price is surprised with Felton’s production. “He’s pretty good for someone that plays for the Maryland Terps; like you would expect those numbers from someone from a bigger school.”
As a freshman, Tai Felton had limited playing time appearing in only eight games. He finished the year with 55 receiving yards, with his best game against the #22 ranked Penn State Nittany Lions, against whom he caught two passes for 22 yards.
After a quiet freshman season, Felton was named a starter heading into the 2022 season. The Maryland wide receiver caught his first touchdown for the Terps against the #4 ranked Michigan Wolverines. He finished his sophomore season with 23 receptions for 309 yards and two touchdowns. He showed potential in his junior year, leading the team in receiving touchdowns (6) and finished second in receptions (48) and receiving yards (723). Felton also accomplished being the first Terp in program history to have three receiving touchdowns in the first half of a game.
Now as a senior, Tai Felton is having an historic year and is making a strong case for the NFL draft, but only time will tell if he can keep up his record-breaking start for the Terps.
