DeMatha Catholic High School is gearing up for its annual homecoming bonfire, a fun tradition that energizes students ahead of the big game. This year, however, the bonfire tradition may be carried out differently due to ongoing construction for a new building on campus, The Cross Center.
Marcel Otim, a sophomore class representative, confirmed that despite the construction, the bonfire will still take place at the DeMatha roundabout. “The bonfire will not be affected by the construction as it will be held at the roundabout,” Otim stated. “However, students will be restricted from entering the construction site.”
Although Marcel states that the bonfire will not be affected by the construction, in recent years many students would hang out around the courtyard during the event. This could potentially create a very clustered area at the roundabout and could even become a safety hazard.
Regarding student safety, Otim says that “security guards will be on standby during the event, and there will be chaperones monitoring students.” Additionally, Student Government Moderator Mr. Sicko stated, “We have all the fire permits from the fire department, plus we’re going to have the Hyattsville Police Department as well as a number of staff and faculty chaperoning.”
When it comes to food options for the bonfire, Otim shared that the Student Government Association has not finalized their decision. “We have not made a clear decision on what food will be provided; however, we are leaning towards Zest Foods and/or food trucks.”
In conclusion, the bonfire is going to be a very exciting event that will bring the DeMatha community together despite ongoing construction. Many freshmen are looking forward to it. First year Nathan Hyun stated in a recent interview, “I can’t wait to attend the bonfire and meet new people from Seton.” A bonfire is not just about the festivities, but also about fostering new friendships and school spirit.
With the support of the Student Government Association and the administration, this year’s bonfire is set to be a memorable celebration for all.
