The Robotics club looks forward to another successful school year filled with many fun projects and competitions. The club aims to introduce students to robotics and encourage them to participate. Many projects are in groups so the club members have to quickly learn to work together in order to complete the project. Junior Ethan Roche took over this year as club president. Two robotics teams have been registered to compete in the Vex Robotics competition this winter.
Mr. Blorstad says, “The DeMatha robotics team has been meeting every day during homeroom since the start of the year to make a robot capable of being both agile and strong.” He says this is the first year DeMatha has entered the competition since 2018 when they placed 2nd among schools in the DMV. The competition is similar to a sporting event, in which a team of robots competes against other teams to score as many points as possible during the match.
This year’s challenge is to place rings on top of poles. The higher poles earn more points than the lower ones.
The robotics club is working to build robots that are able to lift or throw objects accurately. Bonus points are awarded if the robot is able to climb one of the poles.
As they prepare to try and finish among the top of the competition this year, Mr. Roberts said, “Their hard work should pave the way for us to be successful for years to come.” They hope to build a robot that can get them as many points as possible and get them a 1st place finish.
