DeMatha basketball tryouts begin next week as the three teams look to have a great season. DeMatha has done a lot of things like workouts and even a summer league team just to see who the standout players are and who should be picked for the winter roster. The varsity and JV teams are already mostly selected, but the freshman are yet to have been picked for their squad. The summer league is where most of the selection has been made.
Matthew Holm, a former freshman basketball player, has said that “summer league is where they assemble the team and test out their players and team against other high school teams in the summer.” If things don’t go their way, there will be changes and cuts made during tryouts.
Players feel the summer league and fall workouts are more important than tryouts because they already have most of the team selected before tryouts actually occur. The prospective players have said tryouts are only for the coaches to make some final decisions on players they feel could compete for the last few spots. Sophomore Malik Henderson said, “I’m confident with the coach’s selections and I feel that we are going to have a very good season as long as we play together.”
Overall with basketball tryouts coming up and with a lot on the line this year, both JV and varsity basketball have mostly picked their winter rosters and look forward to what could be and should be a fantastic season.
