Winter sports have kicked off at DeMatha Catholic High School, and excitement is high. Two of the winter sports, basketball and track, have already started and coaches have begun making cuts. Both teams held tryouts recently, and many students came out to compete for a spot. Basketball tryouts were packed, with a large number of students there hoping to make the team. The gym was full as players went through drills, showing their skills in dribbling, shooting, and fast breaks. With so many athletes competing, coaches have already started making cuts to narrow down the team.
After the tryouts, the coaches called students into an office and told them if they made the cut or not. Sophomore Blake White said, “I was scared if I was going to get cut or not.” After he went into the office, he found out that he had not been cut.
The high numbers and competitiveness have pushed everyone to give their best in hopes of earning a spot on the final roster.
Track tryouts has also drawn a large crowd. Sophomore Justin Parker mentioned, “There were over 70 people trying out for track.” The high turnout showed just how popular track has become this season. Fellow sophomore Jesse Wright emphasized this, saying, “There was not nearly as many people at track during this time last year.”
It is important to also note that last year there were no official track tryouts. But under the new head coach, HarryAllen, there are tryouts this year to narrow down the team. Athletes have come out for many different events such as sprints, distance, and jumping.
Due to the high amount of athletes, the coaches will begin making cuts, as they prepare to build a strong team to defend their WCAC Track and Field title. Both basketball and track tryouts showed that DeMatha students are eager to compete this season. The large turnouts made it clear that winter sports are a big deal and athletes are determined to make their mark. As the teams take shape, DeMatha’s winter sports season promises to be filled with energy, commitment, and excitement.
