This year’s hockey team has surprised many with how much work they have been putting in. Though they started the season bumpy, they managed to get wins to keep themselves alive. So far this season their record is 5-6-1. Still in the first half of their season, DeMatha Hockey has the potential to make it back to the finals if they continue this hard work and sacrifice to win.
Senior Elijah Monks talked about his mindset for this season. “We plan to keep a rhythm and get more wins,” Monks said. “We have the chemistry and talent in our squad and if we work together we will be unstoppable.” If they compete and get wins they will quickly surpass the 6-15-2 record the team had last year. The faith is strong for DeMatha hockey this year.
This past Friday, the Stags played St. John’s but unfortunately lost 5-4. “It was a tough loss,” senior Conner Hayes said after the game. “We fought our hardest and that’s what matters in my opinion. I don’t take games like these as losses, I take them as lessons to learn from.”
Taking a loss as a lesson is something that can change someone’s mindset and the Stags carry that mindset and want to achieve more. The mission this year for the hockey team is to reach the WCAC finals and win it, for not only the school but for themselves.
Although it was a rough start for the Stags, there are 15 more games left. Anything can happen with the chemistry the Stags have in the rink and the brotherhood they all hold for one another. If they maintain a positive mindset throughout the season they will overcome anything that’ll try to block their path to the WCAC finals. They have high hopes to make it far this season.
