The DeMatha Varsity Wrestling team has officially kicked off their 2024-25 season and is determined to improve on last year’s impressive third place finish in the WCAC Championship.
The Stags started the season with a 2-2 record, earning hard-fought victories over St. John’s and The Heights but falling short against WCAC powerhouse Paul VI and a strong Bishop Ireton squad. Paul VI, the defending WCAC champions, showcased their strengths and performed well while Bishop Ireton proved to be a challenge. Despite the early setbacks, the Stags remain optimistic about their potential this season.
Sophomore Jay Washington spoke about how the team’s youth but emphasized their determination. “We are a young team but we are a hardworking group with a good chance to win the WCAC championship,” Washington said.
Heavyweight wrestler Michael Lebbie highlighted the team’s progress and work ethic. “We started off a little slow, but we have been improving and working harder than ever, and we’ve seen progress with the two recent wins,” Lebbie said.
As the season progresses, DeMatha aims to sharpen their skills and continue building momentum. Their blend of young talent and veteran leadership will be key to their success as they strive to bring a championship back to Madison St.
