DeMatha Catholic High School celebrated its annual St. John de Matha Day this week. It was a day filled with reflection, celebration, and a whole lot of school spirit. This year’s event felt even more special as it marked the end of Fr. James’ time as our president and the beginning of Fr. Albert’s new role as our leader.
The day started with a school-wide Mass in the Convocation Center. Fr. Albert gave the homily, focusing on all the amazing things Fr. James has done for DeMatha over the years. He talked about Fr. James’ dedication to the students, faculty, and the entire DeMatha community. It was clear how much Fr. James meant to everyone, as students, teachers, and alumni all gave him a big round of applause. Some people even looked a little emotional.
Another big moment of the day was when Charles J. Kenny, a DeMatha alum from the Class of 1968, was honored with the 2024 St. John de Matha Medal. After accepting the award, Mr. Kenny gave a powerful speech about living with purpose and carrying on DeMatha’s mission in our own lives. His words got a lot of people thinking about what it means to be part of this community.
As DeMatha prepares for a new era, Fr. Albert seems prepared to step into his new role. “I’m ready to give everything I have and more for this school.” His sincerity is clear, giving confidence to everyone in the community about what’s ahead for DeMatha.
After all the speeches and reflection, the day ended with something every student could get behind: a free lunch! But that wasn’t all. Later in the afternoon, Coach Turk led Christmas caroling around the school. Students and teachers sang along as holiday music echoed through the hallways. It was a fun, lighthearted way to end a day that was all about tradition, gratitude, and looking toward the future at DeMatha.
