The hallways of DeMatha rung with a mix of excitement and hesitation as students returned to class on a Friday following an extended winter break. The unexpected extension came after a series of snowstorms in the area forced the school to remain closed for an additional four days.
While many students enjoyed the extra time off, the decision to reopen on a Friday, with a two-hour delay no less, left some scratching their heads. “It’s weird to come back for just one day before the weekend,” said sophomore Shane Brent. Many students wanted the break to just continue until Monday, while others were happy to come back and see their classmates and friends.
Other students had mixed feelings for the extended break. Some had work they needed to make up, and others missed sports due to the weather. Sophomore Nicholas Norris said, “I only have a week to improve my grades before the quarter ends, so my grades might be bad by the time grades are done.”
The extended time off allowed students to relax and spend quality time with family. Some took advantage of the snow to go sledding or build snowmen, while others stayed indoors, watching their favorite shows or reading.
Teachers and administrators had their own challenges during the break, making adjustments to the academic calendar while ensuring the safety of students and staff. English department co-chair Mr. Clark said, “I thought it was the right thing to do,” referring to starting school back on a Friday rather than waiting until the next Monday.
Even though we have returned back to school, there is still snow and ice on the ground so students and parents are advised to drive slowly and be safe around campus. According to Mr. Dickerson, students should not be playing in the snow and horse-playing around campus either.
Despite the mixed feelings, the return to school in the new year gives everyone a fresh start. As students filled the classrooms, it felt like the community wasn’t even out for three weeks. It was just another day.
