It’s that time of year! Baseball is back, both professionally, collegiately, and at the high school level. DeMatha is prepping for another great season on the diamond after making it to the semifinals last year and losing to St. John’s, who went on to win the WCAC conference over Gonzaga. They finished tied for second with the Cadets in the WCAC regular season standings with a 13-3 record against conference opponents and finished 25-6 overall.
“It was heartbreaking after having a season like that and losing in the semifinals. It just really sucked especially because it was St. John’s” said senior Jayden Dennis.
While notable names departed for college such as Niko Long, Charley Magoulick, Tommy Dietrich, and Manny Hall, this group has been set up for a possible and realistic bounce back. While guys from last year’s team are gone, there are notable names that have one more year with the Stags. Multi-sport star and Maryland commit Bud Coombs, Navy commit Brooks Franklin, Clarion commit Jayden Dennis, John Carroll commit Michael Candy, big right hander Wes Hall, and Youngstown State commit Bryce Palms headline the core that will be leading the varsity squad this year. Others on the come up include Transfer Shane Ladia, Bo Schilling, Zach Perlin, and Grayson Candy who are here to learn and become leaders in the next 1-2 years.
“I feel great about myself this upcoming season,” said Franklin. “I’ve been working on certain weaknesses and have been making adjustments in order to have a successful season. We have a new squad this year with a bunch of great guys and I’m excited to see what we can do.”
