The Rugby Stags are currently undefeated, boasting a remarkable 4-0 record as they approach the commencement of their spring season. Their performance has been nothing short of impressive, marked by significant improvements since their successful fall season in 2024. Notably, they achieved an undefeated streak in both the 7’s tournament and the Medstar 7’s tournament.
The DeMatha Rugby program has been one of the most successful sports programs at DeMatha in recent years. They went undefeated in the spring last year as well. Now, let’s focus on the current season. On Wednesday, the Stags defeated rivals Gonzaga Eagles in a nail-biter, 24 to 21, on Senior Night. Moses Dignam ’25 was named the forward of the game, while Andre Arnold ’25 was named the back of the game.
Senior Moses Dignam explained the positions of forward and back, stating that “forwards are typically numbered 1 to 8, while backs are numbered 9 to 15.” Dignam described forwards as “being stronger and larger, while backs are skinnier and faster.” Their role is to run the ball to try and score. However, the season could have been significantly improved if three of their games against three solid teams, two of which were out of state, had not been canceled.
Despite facing challenges, the Stags persevered and have two crucial games remaining. Their final opponents are Good Counsel and Landon School. They aim to conclude the year on a high note and ensure that the seniors end their journey undefeated.
