DeMatha has one of the best soccer programs in the DMV. After last year’s WCAC championship appearance under then-first year head coach Judah Cooks, the program wanted to go in a new direction, and they did big time.
This past summer, DeMatha hired Daniel Gill to be the new head coach of the program to try and go back to the WCAC championship and win it for the first time since 2015. The team lost 1-0 to Gonzaga in last fall’s title game.
Coach Juan Hernandez ’21 said Coach Gill “is doing a pretty good job, coming in as a first year head year coach, trying to set the standard at a highly competitive school in a very competitive conference like the WCAC.”
Junior outside back Mike Greenleaf said, “He keeps all team activities positive, that’s the main thing. The team has become negative over the changes of leadership. Coach Gill has changed that attitude by making sure that everything he does is for the team, giving us trust in our head coach. and giving us the mindset that he wants us to have.”
Coach Gill is not a stranger to leading a program. Since 2017, he was the head coach as his alma mater Benedictine School of Richmond. He played college ball at Mount St. Mary’s and Longwood University. Coach Gill and his team’s next test is Thursday when they host The Heights. Coach Gill has lofty expectations for his team. Follow along this season to see if they reach those goals and climb back to the top of the WCAC.
