Every year, DeMatha invokes its students to complete a certain number of service hours. This requirement varies by grade level with juniors and seniors on the higher end of the spectrum needing to complete twenty hours each. The summer is one of the best times to get service hours completed, and two Stags in particular will be highlighted for their service.
Senior William Herman volunteered with the service organization Bread for the City. This organization collects and gives food and groceries to those in need. He volunteered his time weekly over the summer and met a diverse population of people, both volunteering and benefitting from the service. “It’s nice to go to the city and help people out,” William stated while reflecting about his time with the Bread for the City organization.
Mrs. Bright offered special praise for sophomore Craig Olmstead, who completed a week-long retreat with President Lincoln’s Cottage. Mrs. Bright says this program is “an incredible week long immersive [experience] into slavery and [modern] human trafficking. Programs like President Lincoln’s Cabin are incredibly interactive educational experiences that end up counting the same towards DeMatha’s service goal as a more traditional way to complete service in the community.”
