The DeMatha Stags’ first three games were everything we expected. All were against teams from Philadelphia, and they came out victorious with a perfect 3-0 start to the season.
The Stags have had to play two of their first three games on the road. Their season opener came against then-15th ranked St. Joe’s Prep. Junior safety Knyair Crumb had two interceptions, and he returned one for a touchdown. Senior running back Elijah Lee, in that same game, scored three rushing touchdowns in an impressive 45-17 win that saw the Stags trailing at halftime. Zion Smith, a North Carolina commit, said preparation was key to their victory. “We didn’t want to lose our first game like last year,” Zion said, “so we prepared great [and] watched a lot of film.”
The stags rolled into Week 2 with momentum and a number 16 national ranking. They had to face Imhotep, another good team from Philadelphia. In that game, senior receiver and return specialist Lavar Keys had four touchdowns, leading DeMatha to a 30-14 win. It was a dominant game from the Stags.
After hosting Imhotep, the Stags were back on the road to Philadelphia to face Roman Catholic in their third game of the season. In that game, junior quarterback Tristan Sabb had three touchdowns, one rushing and two passing. Elijah Lee rushed for another two touchdowns in a 44-7 win over.
Sophomore defensive back Julian Loggins summed up how he felt about going 3-0 vs Philadelphia schools in two words: “pretty chill.” He added, “We went and handled our business.”
