Last Thursday the DeMatha Stags varsity soccer team got their fourth win of the season, defeating Archbishop Carroll by a dominating score of 6-0. Earlier this week, they beat Bishop O’Connell 5-0.
The Stags had a shaky start to the season, losing four of their first six matches and playing to ties in the other two. They were outscored by their opponents by a total of 10 goals over the stretch. They’ve turned things around since the end of September though. Prior to this week, the team rattled off victories against Paul VI, Bishop Ireton, and St. Mary’s Ryken. They have outscored opponents 23-2 during their five-game win streak.
Our varsity players all seem enthusiastic and determined about how they had been playing of late. Junior center/mid Benjamin Lawrence says, “We’ve been playing at our best recently and we want to use this momentum to propel ourselves on our playoff run.”
Junior left back Navare Fermin acknowledged, “The first couple of games were frustrating for us so we had to lock in and play at our best so that we can make the playoffs.”
Now with a record of 5-4-2, the Stags hope to use this momentum and to carry it into this final week of the regular season with matches set against Bishop McNamara Thursday afternoon and Gonzaga on Tuesday.
