DeMatha’s intramural dodgeball league was first introduced last year and opened its second season this Thursday.
Before last year, DeMatha had class-level dodgeball during pep rallies and in-school events. Eventually, Mr. Sicko and the SGA realized how many people enjoyed playing dogeball at school events and decided to introduce an intramural league. Now it is an after-school activity, where everyone is allowed to come. Last year, Joe LeGloahec, who was a junior at the time, was the leader of the team that won.
Mr. Sicko says the primary goal of the league is “just general fun. We want guys to feel some kind of camaraderie, being on a team. We want them to have another touch point in school…Have fun, build that brotherhood.”
If you haven’t yet joined the league this year, it’s not too late and Mr. Sicko encourages students to join. “Honestly, it’s a really good time. It doesn’t take a lot of time. We try to do it on Thursdays after school with that 2 p.m. dismissal. We know guys have band, sports, jobs…It’s all around a really good time where you kind of get to hang out with your friends in a structured way.”
Without a doubt, the most important benefit Mr. Sicko believes the dodgeball league offers is community. “We always make [the games] open to spectators. We want guys who don’t necessarily want to participate, maybe don’t want to run around…but can still have fun, root your friends on, or joke about how the game went on later.”
