This past Friday was DeMatha’s first Cyber Day of the 2025-26 school year. All of DeMatha’s students were permitted to stay home from school while DeMatha staff went on their faculty retreat.
This Cyber Day also marked the beginning of the second quarter and gave teachers extra time to catch up on grading before first quarter report cards come out next week.
Sophomore Dylan Wood states, “Cyber Days are cool. You can sleep more which helps you focus better. You can also work at your own pace.”
On Cyber Days, teachers are allowed to assign their students work to do at home for that day. These assignments typically aren’t too long, ranging from note taking on a video to a quick DeltaMath assignment, so most students consider a Cyber Day as a day off because of the free time they get afterward. “[Cyber Days] are better than regular days. I get more time to sleep,” sophomore Benjamin Bayes said, echoing Dylan’s sentiment. Fellow sophomore Ryan Galloway said, “Cyber Days are a good balance between school and digital learning.”
Another benefit to these days, they are a way to ensure that teachers are able to provide virtual assignments in the case of a school shutdown. Cyber Days proved to be very handy when DeMatha was forced to move to virtual learning for a year during the Coronavirus pandemic in 2020.
