The Disc Golf Club at DeMatha is one of the newest and fastest growing clubs in the school. Founded by a few students alongside Mr. Roberts in 2024, the Disc Golf Club has recently started meeting for its second year.
Disc golf is played like traditional golf, but players throw a flying disc towards a metal “basket” instead of using balls and clubs. Like golf, the objective is to complete a 9 or 18 hole course in the fewest throws possible. There are also specialized discs for long distance and putting.
The Disc Golf Club is welcoming to new members and not necessarily competitive. Senior Ian Clarke is a founding member of the club and invites anybody to come out. “Don’t worry if you don’t have any discs, or don’t know how to play. We offer spare discs for those who don’t have their own and can teach you how to throw them.”
The club has already started meeting every Wednesday after school. They meet at a few different courses but their main course is Calvert Disc Golf Course, off Calvert Road between College Park and Berwyn Heights. DeMatha’s club record for the Calvert course is 8 under par.
Clarke says they typically have “between three and five members” meet every Wednesday to go play. Weekly participation is not mandatory and members are encouraged to make it out whenever they are able to. Another founding member, sophomore Elijah Magrogan admits he hasn’t “been able to go to the course every time the club meets,” so you can still join the club even if your availability changes week-to-week. As the club continues to grow, Elijah says he is looking forward to trying to come more often as his schedule frees up.
Prospective members should feel free to reach out to Ian Clarke or Mr. Roberts for more details about the club. Mr. Roberts is planning to host future competitions among club members for possible prizes such as new discs or getting a registered Professional Disc Golf Association number to compete in recognized tournaments. Members are also open to the idea of competing against other schools in the future.
