When it comes to winter sports, a lot of focus is placed on basketball. However, one sport that often goes under the radar is wrestling. DeMatha’s Varsity wrestling consists of around 20 kids with about 12 starters. The non-starters wrestle at Parkdale for a competition, and teammate and varsity starting wrestler Zach Richards has confidence they can win.

In the tournament that the starters took place in a couple days ago Zach says they did “alright” saying the competition was pretty hard, as they wrestled people from outside Maryland, such as New Jersey. Jordan Williams, class of 2024, placed second in this tournament and was the only one that placed.

Zach was close to placing in the top 6, but he stated, “that as the season goes on we will improve as individuals and as a team, and we will be able to have more people  place in future competitions.” Zach continued saying that he’s,”Looking forward to the rest of the season, and looking forward to the hard work ahead.” He finished by saying, “Once we do the hard work in practice and outside practice we’ll start being able to see the results.

Their next tournament, called Cavalier Duals, takes place at Spalding. They will be competing against schools such as McDonough and Mount Saint Joseph, Spalding, and others. Their season officially ends on February 25.

Good Luck to Wrestling for the rest of the year!
