DeMatha is out of school this Monday due to Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Many view this day as a day of service and a great way to get service hours. The DeMatha community has multiple ways of giving back to the community.
One of these ways is through an organization called KEEN, which is an organization that empowers kids with disabilities by participating in fun, free, non-competitive, one-on-one programs of physical activity, which supports the overall well being of the participants. DeMatha students participate in this organization by playing basketball with a KEEN athlete and creating relationships with kids.
Another way DeMatha is serving our community this weekend is by helping in the college park community food bank, where they deep clean and organize the pantry, wipe down surfaces, and appliances with cleaning supplies.
MLK Day means something to several students at DeMatha. Will Herman, a junior at DeMatha, says “[MLK day] honors a guy who did good things”, while other students like Ryan Pickett just think of it as “another day off of school”
These acts show that Martin Luther King Jr’s Legacy continues to live on in the DeMatha community, and show how much you can help your community.
