On October 4, DeMatha Catholic High School hosted its annual homecoming event. Students from both DeMatha and Elizabeth Seton High School had the opportunity to participate in various activities and dance to music.
This year’s homecoming theme was Casino Night. SGA president Gordon Johnson explained how they settled on the theme. “We picked casino theme because we wanted to do something that was never done before,” Johnson says. “We decided to let the students decide the homecoming theme. We sent out a Google form to let the students decide what they wanted their theme to be.”
Poker, arcade basketball, pac-man, and other activities were available for students. Zest food services also provided an area where you could get water, juice and chips as snacks if you got hungry. In another area there were cookies and brownies for dessert. For something more substantive, they offered pork, hamburger buns, pico de gallo, cheese sauce, and other sauces.
This was DeMatha’s second year not having the convocation center split in half where one half served as a section for dancing with the other half designated for activities. This year the dance section was in the middle of the floor and the activities were to the left and right sides.

In addition to the casino and arcade-style games, there was a spot where people could sit down and watch a movie to the right side of the dance floor while a photo booth was set up to the left. Was the event worth the price of admission? “Yeah, definitely worth it,” junior Owen Connell said.
Multiple students, including sophomore Chase Snyder, agreed with Owen’s assessment. “Yeah, [it] definitely was worth going to. With a date or without a date, it was awesome. SGA definitely did a great job with setting it all up.”
The SGA anticipated the dance to sell out, and it did. Gordon Johnson says they sold the most tickets and had the largest attendance ever. Everybody at the dance thought it was a big success. Chase Snyder, asked if the event was better than last year’s, said, “Yeah, I think it was.”
