DeMatha Golf Season Preview

DeMatha spring sports are just getting under way, which means golf season has arrived. With a small roster last season, the team is bringing a lot of new faces into the DeMatha program.

Spring golf started during the 1960s. Since that time, they have been very successful in winning championships and titles for the school. DeMatha’s varsity golf coach was the legendary teacher and coach, Ray Smith.

Their current head coach is Dan Spotts ‘81, one of the golfers on Coach Smith’s first championship team. Coach Spotts is looking to win the school’s 15th conference championship and they look to be heading in the right direction with several the new faces.

Freshman Golfer Joseph Vartabedian is looking forward to being a part of varsity golf by completing tryouts in his first spring at DeMatha. Joseph is very confident that he will be participating on the golf team. “I think I would fit well because I know most and/or all of them on the team,” Joseph said.

Last year was a good year for DeMatha Golf. The team finished with a record of 8-2 but fell short of both a conference championship and the Maryland Private School Championship. The last year they won a championship was 2008, and while they’ve had several successful seasons like last year, Gonzaga has been among the strongest teams with several recent WCAC titles. With many new golfers and returning players, DeMatha hopes to change that this spring.

Everyone is so excited for a new golf season. There will be big changes, with new faces joining some familiar ones and new game plans, all to hopefully win DeMatha’s 15th WCAC golf championship.
