From April 24 through April 26, the DeMatha Players will be performing the musical, Anastasia: The Musical. It will be performed at 7pm on the 24th and 25th, and at 2pm on the 26th, with all three performances in the Convocation Center in room 7302. The play is based on the animated movie Anastasia, made by 20th Century Fox.
“Anastasia is based on the movie from the 90s and is full of iconic songs,” said director Mr. Keith Rafferty. “It is a story of a daring attempt at a con that turns real when a fake princess turns out to be a real one in the middle of the early Soviet Union. It’s been a lot of fun to work on the show with the students, including several guests from other schools.”
There are around 14 students performing the play, and not all of them are DeMatha students. The Players brought in female students from a few different schools, including Good Counsel and Northwestern high schools. Bringing in female actors can take a play to the next level and it widens the range of plays they are able to perform.
David Lopez Maldonado is a freshman who is performing as Dmitry. He says, “I am most excited for my fellow cast members’ solos so I can see them shine and also about the memories I have made and will make.” David also commented on the bond the Players have with each other. “Practicing and interacting with them is so much fun and this will make performing much better and more fun.”
Sophomore Renaldo Harper attended last year’s play and was very impressed by the performance. “I was at the play last year and very much enjoyed it. I was kinda surprised by the level of it and it was pretty fun to watch my friends.”
By blending DeMatha student performers with guest artists, this production of Anastasia: The Musical by the DeMatha Players will be a fun and entertaining watch for all ages. Tickets are available using the QR codes on fliers located all around the school building.
