On May 4, every freshman, sophomore, and junior was sent an email to vote in this year’s Student Government Association elections. These elections will take action next school year. Students were asked to vote for their class representatives for the upcoming school year. They were also asked to vote on the next president and vice president, sergeant at arms, treasurer, and secretary of the SGA.
The next SGA president will be Jackson Skaare and his vice president will be Jesse Wright. The secretary will be Ethan Minckler, treasurer will be Marcel Otim, and the sergeant at arms will be Eli Hoppe.
Newly elected President Jackson Skaare has several ideas he hopes to accomplish next year. “My main goal next year is to drive true inclusivity across our community by lowering the cost of admission to school events, making sure financial barriers never keep a student from participating.” Jackson will carry on the legacy of past presidents such as Jackson Ross, and this year’s co-presidents, Rob Reeser and Gordon Johnson. “I have learned from the valuable lessons that they have shown such as the necessity of listening to the student body first, the resilience needed to work with [school] administration, and the power of trusting my SGA team to lead effectively.”
Christian Jones will be a representative for the junior class next year after not being elected to SGA for his sophomore year. “I wanted to run for SGA because I want DeMatha to be a place where students are heard and I want to create more engagement from the student body, as well.” Christian also has a few ideas he wants to be a part of next year. “I want to create an environment where there are more student-led events, possibly creating a poll that allows students to pick and choose what types of games they want at the seasonal pep rallies. Another goal I have is to improve student-teacher relationships.”
Rising junior Jacob Lang will be returning to the SGA next year. He was elected as a class representative in both his freshman and sophomore years. Jacob commented on what he is looking forward to the most next year as a member of the SGA. “I am looking forward to see what Jackson Skaare and Jesse Wright are able to improve on. I have seen a constant increase in events as presidents have gone on, so I wanna see if Jackson and Jesse can do better than Gordon and Rob.”
Being a member of the SGA is a great honor, but also a big responsibility. The SGA needs to look out for the students’ needs first. They spend so much time behind the scenes planning and preparing for school-wide events such as pep rallies, spirit weeks, A-day homeroom activities, and so much more. Congratulations and good luck to next year’s Student Government Association!
