The Ecology Club helped out school wildlife by putting up bat boxes around the main building on Wednesday.
The project was led by Mrs. Hiltke, current Ecology Club Moderator, and Mr. Hager ’73, former Ecology Club Moderator. They helped students build the boxes, alongside Mr. Blorstad, to create more safe areas for bats to sleep during the day.
Mr. Hager was the one who actually was on the roof of the main building to install the bat boxes. The students helped build and plan the project.
Bats are great pollinators and they help get rid of many insects, including mosquitoes. These bat boxes were put in place to foster these populations of bats and help plants get pollinated in this spring season.
Albert Cummings, a junior who was present when the bat boxes were going up, said, “This project was fun and it really helped me to understand how important bats are, which I didn’t know before.”
The project also helped Ecology Club students learn about engineering and working with tools. Sophomore Xavier Crawley, who was working alongside Albert, said, “This project was really interesting. Not only did I learn about bats and how they affect the environment, but I also got to work with my hands and use power tools like a drill and saw.”
