Freshman Basketball Home Opener Recap

With fall sports officially being over, it’s now time for the winter sports. After finishing the previous season 9-7, the new upcoming freshmen are looking to be even better. These young 9th graders came to DeMatha for an opportunity to play the sport that they love. Many want to impress the JV and Varsity coaches to show that DeMatha basketball program will be great for years to come.

In the home opener, the freshman team took on Bullis High School. The freshman showed several positive flashes that they can be a great team this year. It was a back and forth throughout the whole game, but Bullis went on a 2nd half run and took control winning 53-39 in the home opener. DeMatha has some work to do, but there’s still a whole season to play, so they have plenty of time to get better.

After playing their first high school basketball game a couple of the freshman players were asked what their goals were for the rest of the season. “I’m trying to be the best I can. I’m trying to get more rebounds and points in the paint,” said Zion Smith. Christian Walker has his own goals, including “to score more in the crunch and to become a better leader during the season.”
