It’s that time of year. It’s time for DeMatha Catholic High School’s annual food drive.
Around the thanksgiving season every year, DeMatha holds a food drive to help people in the local community eat and have a thanksgiving meal. The canned goods are distributed between seven organizations across the Washington DC area.
During last year’s food drive, we collected more than 13,000 canned goods. If we meet our goal by reaching that number of donations again this year, the DeMatha community gets the Monday after Thanksgiving off as a reward.
More than one-third of residents in the Washington DC area are hungry, Mrs. Bright informed the school community during Tuesday’s prayer service kicking off the Food Drive. “We want to make it our mission to help people in need of food by collecting canned goods,” she added.
The Food Drive officially began on Wednesday with a tag day. Students participated by bringing in $3 or four canned goods. Mr. April emphasizes, “We are not doing this for the day off. We are doing it to help out.”
The Food Drive starts ends November 20. The school brought in nearly 3,000 canned food items on Wednesday’s tag day and will need to collect 10,000 more in the drive’s final two weeks. Let’s do our part in the community and bring in canned goods to help people and families in need.
