On November 29, DeMatha’s varsity basketball team had their season opener against Our Lady of Mount Carmel. The game was neck and neck through the first half, with Mount Carmel and DeMatha tied at 14 early in the second quarter before Mount Carmel took a 29-25 lead into halftime.
The Stags had fallen behind by 10 going into the fourth quarter before senior Ashton Meeks took it upon himself to help his team rally.
The Stags finished the game on a 14-0 run, winning 62-58. Meeks finished with 24 points and 7 rebounds to help his team. Junior forward Danny Abass added 15 points and 9 rebounds to the effort.
After the win, DeMatha was placed into the top 25 nationally by MaxPreps. Sports illustrated has DeMatha in the top 3 in Maryland with Bishop McNamara at #1 and Mount Carmel right behind at #3.
“It was just a really good team win,” Abass said after the game. “We wanted it more and it showed in the fourth quarter.”
