DeMatha’s Latino Student Union has been on a roll this year. They are a club advised by Ms. Barretto who came to DeMatha from Elizabeth Seton in 2023. She has helped the LSU take a big step forward in making a positive impact at DeMatha.
The club meets every Thursday after 2 p.m. dismissals. It is a very well-organized club consisting of many representatives from each grade along and all the leadership positions other large organizations at DeMatha have, including a president, vice president, and even a student secretary.
Junior class representative Alexander Torres has been an impactful member of the LSU this year. “I feel like our club has a positive impact on the school by creating a welcome space for Latino students and many others who are interested,” Alexander says. “We also promote cultural awareness and encourage pride, leadership, and involvement throughout the student body.”
Alexander highlights the importance of the club and why it is important to our school. The Latino Student Union is constantly at work. They love to provide events for the school and have had great success already. Freshman LSU representative David Salmeron says, “In the past we have hosted a slushy sale to build funding and recognition of the club to help us support other events.”
The slushy sale earlier this year was a huge success. They had students going crazy for them at lunch and raised many funds that will support the club to do even more things for the school in the future. Speaking on future events, Alexander says “We have several events planned for the future, including cultural celebrations, [as well as] community and service projects. We also plan to collaborate with other clubs like the Latino Club at Elizabeth Seton.”
The Latino Student Union has a lot in store for DeMatha and will be making a big impact on the school and hopes to continue expanding its presence as the school year progresses. Freshman participant Dave Marroquin says, “I believe that with the events we have planned, the club can become one of the most loved in the school. We prioritize community and bonding which is what I love about the club and why it makes it such a welcoming environment for students of all different kinds of backgrounds.”
The LSU has a clear mission in mind as members will tell you. Alexander Torres says, “I definitely encourage all students who aren’t in a club to come check out the Latino Student Union. We make everyone feel welcome and we always have fun.” Be on the lookout for future events that they have planned for the school year.
