After the Christmas and New Year break, students come back and have to prepare for the second semester. DeMatha’s Student Government Association has some fun events coming up to keep the spirit and drive going.
DeMatha has a really exciting spirit week planned out for Martin Luther King Jr week, running from January 20 through January 23, which students are looking forward to. During that week, each day will be a free tag day with different themes including a white-out day, a class colors day, a DeMatha gear day, and a college gear day.
Looking at what the students are expecting and what they are excited for it seems like students would enjoy this week. Sophomore Zion John says, “I’m mostly excited about the chance to wear regular clothes and be able to be comfortable.” He and lots of other students are excited to be able to get out of the school’s uniform for a few days.
This week is basically a fun way for everyone to show school pride while having freedom with what they wear. Sophomore Connor Stesney, a carsity hockey player, says, “I’m most excited for college gear day so I could represent Wisconsin.” Spanish teacher Mrs. Barreto says, “I’m excited for the dress down week because they are normally fun and I can get creative with my outfits.”
The main event of that week will be the winter sports pep rally on the 23rd. This pep rally is going to be packed with lots of fun activities and competitions. The SGA is bringing back popular events from last year like the obstacle course and the teachers vs students 3 point contest. Sophomore basketball player Brad Jackson says “I’m excited to go against some teachers in the 3 point contest and win.” There will also be other events, too, so there will be something for everyone to enjoy.
After the pep rally students will have the opportunity to go to the Gardens Ice House in Laurel. DeMatha has rented out the rink from 3:20 to 520 p.m. for students to skate with friends and hang out. Snacks from the concession stands will also be available. Our sister school Elizabeth Seton is also invited so it will be a good way to socialize and meet new people.

Later, everyone can come back to Gardens to watch the hockey team play their senior night game and cheer the Stags on. Connor Stesney says, “As a varsity hockey player, I’m excited to skate with friends and Seton, and be able to support and play with the seniors on senior night.”
The SGA plans to survey students and ask them about what they liked most about spirit week and what could be better. The SGA is gonna use this to plan future events and see what people actually like.
