The BSU, or Black Student Union, at DeMatha is a student-lead organization which is dedicated to celebrating and promoting cultural heritage, achievements, and contributions of Black students in the school community. BSU is a club where anyone is welcome to join.
President Jeremy Mack is a big influence in BSU. Jeremy is part of the varsity football team and is known around the school for his energy and good soul. “Joining BSU would allow a student to feel as though they are a part of a majority instead of a minority,” Mack says. “BSU is somewhere students can come speak their minds and create a brotherhood of people who look like us.” In all, BSU wants to help students connect with each other and build a strong representation of the DeMatha brotherhood.
Current and past members of BSU all have had good things to say about the club and the experiences they get out of it. Zion John, a sophomore member of the club, says one of the BSU’s mottos is, “We want to make sure this is more than just a club but a lifelong commitment and bond.” The students who are part of BSU all have similar thoughts when you ask them about it, which is the experience of BSU isn’t how one person makes the experience, but what the community inside of BSU makes it. BSU is like a fist; when closed, they become tight like a brotherhood.
