As the first semester comes to an end and class schedules change for many students, it’s a good time to look back and reflect on past classes. Some were more enjoyable than others, but what makes the classes so unique from one another is what you do in them. Classroom activities are extremely unique across electives, ranging from lab work to a school news article in The Stagline. Classroom activities are what make school a fun and safe environment.
Sophomore Sam Johnson said his favorite activity he’s done in class was in his AP Computer Principle elective. “I always have had a strong love for coding,” Sam says, adding that he particularly likes being able to do so during class time. “I like using code to make cool images. The other day I used code to make a sunset image.” Sam likes that you can create almost anything using code. “It can range from a simple square to a pixelated video game. The possibilities are truly endless.”
Sam Chapell, another Sophomore, said his favorite activity was watching a documentary in his Understanding 9/11 class. “I really liked how it goes [in] depth about the events of 9/11 and the stories of people during that fateful day,” he says. He found the hunt for Osama Bin Laden particularly compelling. “It was an interesting aspect of how wanted he was and how the government was doing everything in their power to find him.”
Not every interesting assignment has to come from elective courses. A third member of the sophomore class, Renaldo Harper, said independent reading in his American Literature class is his favorite activity. “I love that we get to read for five minutes in Mrs. Lama’s class,” he says. “I think it allows us to relax our minds and read something that attracts our interest.” Right now he is spending independent reading time on a book titled Quarantine, “where there is this deadly virus going around and people join gangs for protection from the virus and each other.”
Student activities are a very important part of DeMatha life and students can find enjoyment from those as simple as reading a book or as complex as the world of coding. Whatever your activity is, when at DeMatha it will always be unique.
